Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) in southern Anhui province is the quintessential landscape of classical Chinese ink paintings. Characterized by gnarled guest-greeting pines rooted in granite clefts, jagged peaks thrusting through swirling oceans of clouds, and sheer stone cliffs, it remains one of the most revered mountain sanctuaries in Asia.
Choosing Your Ascent: Yungu vs Yuping Cableway
Huangshan is steep, with thousands of vertical stone stairways carved into solid granite. While fit hikers can climb from the base in four to five hours, 90% of travelers take one of the two modern aerial cableways:
- Yungu Cableway (Back Mountain / Eastern Route – Recommended for Ascent): Departs from Yungu Temple station. The 8-minute ride ascends gently to the White Goose Ridge, placing you near the mountain’s flatter northern plateau with easy walking access to Beihai Hotel, Shixin Peak, and the Cloud Dispelling Pavilion.

At the bottom of the canyon, ride the futuristic West Sea Sightseeing Cable Car—a panoramic funicular railway that glides up the cliff face in under three minutes to Tianhai station near Bright Summit (Guangming Ding). This loop saves three hours of exhausting uphill stair climbing.

To witness the famous “Sea of Clouds” (Yùnhǎi) and sunrise over the eastern peaks, you must sleep on top of the mountain.
