Visiting Huangshan (Yellow Mountain): Cable Cars

Celebrated for centuries in classical Chinese ink-wash scrolls and poetry, Huangshan (黄山, Yellow Mountain) in southern Anhui Province presents one of East Asia’s most iconic landscapes: gnarled granite peaks, twisted ancient pines clinging to sheer precipices, and the ethereal “Sea of Clouds” rolling through misty mountain ravines. Navigating the mountain’s modern cable car network allows independent travelers to reach summit trails efficiently and experience sunrise and sunset above the cloud deck.
At a Glance: Huangshan Cable Cars & Summit Essentials
1. The Cable Car Network: Eastern vs. Western Ascents
Huangshan is a colossal granite massif rising to 1,864 meters at Lotus Peak. Climbing entirely on foot requires conquering over 60,000 steep stone steps—an exhausting five-hour uphill ordeal. Fortunately, three advanced passenger ropeways transport visitors up to the summit ridges in minutes:

- Yungu Cable Car (云谷索道 – Eastern Route): Departs from Yungu Temple station to White Goose Ridge (白鹅岭). This is the recommended route for mountain ascent. The climb is gentle and scenic, arriving at the flatter northern shoulder of the summit plateau within easy walking distance of Beginning-to-Believe Peak, Black Tiger Pine, and Beihai Hotel. (80 RMB one way, 8 minutes).
- Yuping Cable Car (玉屏索道 – Western Route): Departs from Mercure / Zhaixi area to Jade Screen Pavilion (玉屏楼). This route ascends the dramatic western crags directly beneath Tiandu Peak and Lotus Peak, landing steps away from the millennium-old Guest-Greeting Pine (迎客松). Because the terrain here is significantly steeper, hiking down this side to descend via Yuping Cable Car is the classic loop. (90 RMB one way, 10 minutes).
- Taiping Cable Car (太平索道 – Northern Route): Links the northern Songgu Nunnery to Purple Cloud Peak. Boasting Asia’s largest passenger cable car cabin (holding up to 100 passengers), it serves travelers approaching the mountain from Taiping Lake. (80 RMB one way).
2. Recommended Two-Day Summit Loop Itinerary
To witness both mountain sunset and morning sunrise without rushing, staying one night at a summit hotel is strongly advised:
- Day 1 Morning (Ascent via Yungu Cable Car): From Tangkou base town, take the scenic shuttle bus to Yungu Temple (20 minutes, 19 RMB) and ride the Yungu Cable Car up to White Goose Ridge. Hike along paved pine-shaded paths to Beginning-to-Believe Peak (始信峰), where ancient twisted Huangshan pines sprout directly out of solid vertical granite cracks. Continue to Lion Peak (狮子峰) and check in at Beihai Hotel, Shilin Hotel, or Xihai Hotel.
- Day 1 Afternoon (West Sea Grand Canyon Loop): Enter the dramatic West Sea Grand Canyon (西海大峡谷) through the First Ring and Second Ring stone boardwalks bolted onto vertical precipices. Descend into the depths of the canyon surrounded by sheer stone towers. At the canyon floor, board the automated clifftop monorail funicular train (100 RMB), which glides straight up the cliff face to Tianhai station near Baiyun Hotel (白云宾馆).
- Day 1 Evening (Sunset at Cloud Dispelling Pavilion): Walk to Cloud Dispelling Pavilion (排云亭) or Bright Summit (光明顶) to watch the sun drop behind jagged western ridges as evening mist fills the valleys.
- Day 2 Morning (Sunrise at Bright Summit): Wake up 45 minutes before dawn and join hikers at Bright Summit (光明顶, 1,860m)—Huangshan’s central panoramic vantage point. As the sun breaks over the horizon, morning light illuminates sea-like mist swirling between the peaks.
- Day 2 Late Morning (Guest-Greeting Pine to Yuping Descent): Hike south past Turtle Peak (鳌鱼峰) and descend the steep Hundred-Step Cloud Ladder (百步云梯) to Jade Screen Pavilion. Snap a photo with the world-famous Guest-Greeting Pine (迎客松) before boarding the Yuping Cable Car back down to the mountain base. Take the park shuttle bus back to Tangkou by early afternoon.
3. Transportation from High-Speed Rail to Huangshan Base
Avoid confusing the ancient city of Tunxi (Huangshan City center) with the actual mountain scenic area:
- Arrival by Bullet Train: Modern high-speed trains arrive at Huangshan North Railway Station (黄山北站). Tangkou base town sits 50 kilometers north of the station.
- Station Express Bus to Tangkou: Immediately exit the railway station and turn left into the Huangshan North Tourism Transport Center. Direct express coaches depart every 30 minutes for Tangkou Scenic Area Transfer Center (汤口换乘中心) (approx. 50 minutes, 30 RMB).
- Mandatory Base Transfer Shuttle: Private cars and taxis are not permitted inside the national park gate. All visitors must purchase a scenic area green shuttle bus ticket (19 RMB one way) at Tangkou Transfer Center to reach either Yungu Cable Car (Eastern Gate) or Yuping Cable Car (Western Gate).
4. Chasing the Sea of Clouds (云海) & Weather Tips
The famed “Sea of Clouds” occurs approximately 50 to 70 days per year, predominantly between October and April. It forms when cool air and high humidity follow light rain or snowfall, causing dense fog blankets to settle into valleys while high granite summits remain bathed in brilliant sunshine.

- Rain Ponchos Only (No Metal Umbrellas): High mountain granite peaks are subject to sudden convective lightning storms. Using metal-ribbed umbrellas on exposed summit ridges is strictly prohibited by park rangers. Pack sturdy rain ponchos and wear slip-resistant rubber-soled footwear.
- Summit Luggage Strategy: Leave your heavy rolling suitcases in luggage lockers at your Tangkou base hotel (typically free or 10 RMB per bag). Take only a light backpack containing a warm fleece, change of clothes, toiletries, and phone charger up the mountain. Porters (挑夫) can carry bags up the steps, but charge 200 to 400 RMB depending on weight and distance.
- Advance Hotel Reservations: Summit hotels (Baiyun, Beihai, Shilin, Xihai) are limited and fill up months in advance during holidays and autumn weekends. Book summit rooms well ahead of time through Trip.com to secure your sunrise spot.
