Every winter between late December and late February, the northeastern city of Harbin in Heilongjiang province transforms into a luminous frozen kingdom. The Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival is the largest winter event on Earth, featuring life-size crystal palaces, 40-meter pagodas, and 500-meter ice slides carved entirely from massive blocks of frozen Songhua River water illuminated by thousands of multi-colored LED computer displays.

Historic Central Street & Russian Architecture
Harbin was developed in the late 19th century as a railway junction for the Russian-built Chinese Eastern Railway. Stroll down cobblestone Zhongyang Pedestrian Street (Central Street) lined with Russian neoclassical and Art Nouveau architecture, tasting famous Madie’er ice cream bars in the freezing air, and photograph the iconic green Byzantine dome of Saint Sophia Cathedral.
