Tiger Leaping Gorge (Hutiao Xia) in northwestern Yunnan is one of the deepest river canyons on Earth, cut dramatically between the 5,596-meter summit of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and the 5,396-meter cliffs of Haba Snow Mountain. The roaring Jinsha River (the upper Yangtze) thunders through the gorge floor over two thousand meters below the High Trail.
The Classic 2-Day High Trail Itinerary
While tour buses drive along the flat lower road, real hikers take the High Trail—a narrow dirt path carving across mountain ridges with unblocked views of glaciated peaks. The standard trek takes two days:
- Day 1: Qiaotou to Halfway Guesthouse (5 – 6 hours): Start early from Qiaotou (Hutiaoxia Town). The trail ascends gently past Naxi Family Guesthouse before reaching the infamous 28 Bends—a steep, switchbacking climb up rocky slopes. Take your time, rest at stone markers, and reach Tea Horse Guesthouse for lunch. Continue along open cliff paths to Halfway Guesthouse in Bendiwan village for the night.
- Day 2: Halfway Guesthouse to Tina’s & Down to the Rapids (3 – 4 hours): Walk from Halfway across mountain waterfalls to Tina’s Guesthouse. Leave your heavy daypack at Tina’s and hike down the steep rocky trail to the Middle Gorge riverbank, where the river narrows to thirty meters and thunders against the legendary Tiger Leaping Stone.
Staying at Halfway Guesthouse
Halfway Guesthouse has hosted international backpackers for over thirty years. Its rooftop observation terrace features unblocked views across the canyon to the snow-covered limestone spires of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Hot showers, hearty yak butter tea, and wood-fired stir-fry dishes are available after a long day on the trail. Book private balcony rooms well in advance during spring and autumn trekking seasons.
Luggage Transfer & Trailhead Logistics
Do not carry your main rolling suitcase on the trail. When boarding the tourist bus from Lijiang or Shangri-La to Qiaotou, drivers will transport your heavy luggage ahead to Tina’s Guesthouse for a nominal fee of 20 RMB per bag. You only need to hike with a 20-liter daypack containing warm layers, rain gear, and water.
How to Connect to Lijiang and Shangri-La
