How the Hours Are Calculated
The transit clock does not start the minute your plane touches the runway. Official immigration calculation begins at 00:00 (midnight) on the day following your arrival. For example, if you land at Shanghai Pudong Airport at 8:00 AM on Monday, your 144-hour or 240-hour clock begins counting from 00:00 on Tuesday morning. This effectively grants you nearly an extra full day of exploration in China.
Eligible Nationalities & Regional Movement Borders
Citizens of 54 countries currently qualify, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, all European Schengen nations, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and South Korea. However, you must observe regional movement restrictions depending on your arrival port:
- Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Cluster: Enter via Beijing Capital (PEK) or Beijing Daxing (PKX) and travel freely across Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei province.
- Yangtze River Delta Cluster: Enter via Shanghai (PVG/SHA), Hangzhou (HGH), or Nanjing (NKG) and travel freely across Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang provinces.

When checking in at your departure airport, notify airline counter staff that you are using China’s 144/240-Hour Visa-Free Transit. Present your confirmed ongoing ticket to Country C booked on Trip.com Flights with an international carrier.
Upon landing in China, do not join the standard visitor immigration queue. Follow signs marked 24/144-Hour Transit Without Visa (临时入境申请).
